POLICY BRIEF 1: FUTURE GENERATIONS POLICY BRIEF OVERVIEW MEETING THE NEEDS OF THE PRESENT WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE ABILITY OF FUTURE GENERATIONS TO MEET THEIRS

Choices we make today will have consequences for 10 billion people yet to be born this century, most in low- and middle-in come countries, whom we have a duty to protect from foresee able harms. We have unprecedented capacity to understand the intergenerational impact of our decisions, but despite 75 years of commitments to safeguarding the future, no mechanism exists at the global level to put that understanding at the service of decision makers. There is a growing body of practice at the national level on which to build, as well as a history across many traditions and cultures. In an era of existential threats, the time has come to deliver on our commitment.
