The Peace Day Forum "Showcasing the Power and Value of Women, Peace, and Security in Kuwait and Beyond"
Kuwait City, October 3, 2024 – The Peace Day Forum, titled "Showcasing the Power and Value of Women, Peace, and Security in Kuwait and Beyond," took place at the UN House, marking the 24th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. Organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator Office, the EU Delegation, and NATO’s Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, the event brought together Kuwaiti officials, international organizations, and civil society leaders.
The forum commenced with remarks from the UN Resident Coordinator @ghadaeltahir, the Assistant Foreign Minister for Human Rights Affairs HE Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Al-Sabah, and the EU Ambassador to Kuwait Mrs. Anne Koistinen, who highlighted Kuwait's achievements in promoting the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda. Notably, Kuwait established the National Committee on Women, Peace, and Security in December 2023 and ranks third in the Arab world on the WPS index.
A keynote address by Ms. Irene Fellin, NATO’s Special Representative for Women, Peace, and Security, emphasized the critical role women play in peacebuilding. A compelling video on Resolution 1325 followed, leading into a session on international efforts to advance the WPS agenda, featuring insights from UN and EU representatives, and an engaging Q&A.
Discussions focused on women's contributions to peace and security in Kuwait, with presentations from the Ministries of Defense, Interior, Justice, and Information. Participants underscored the necessity of inclusive dialogues that elevate diverse voices in peace processes.
This event reinforced the UN's commitment to building a peaceful and secure future for all, showcasing how women's active participation leads to more sustainable and inclusive outcomes. As the UN in Kuwait continues to foster peace through collaboration with local and international partners, it remains dedicated to championing the WPS agenda.
